GETTING STARTED WITH WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

You’ve read about weight loss surgery and know a little bit about the different options available to you. You’ve struggled to lose weight in the past and think that weight loss surgery might be the best treatment option for you. Now what?

Here’s how to get started on the path to improved health and long-term results with weight loss surgery.

CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE PROVIDER

If you plan to have your insurance company cover part of the cost of your weight loss surgery, it’s a good idea to contact them first to learn about their requirements. Make sure your policy covers bariatric surgery and ask about the specific qualifications your provider has.

CONTACT YOUR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER

Most insurance companies will require a recommendation for weight loss surgery from your primary physician. Schedule a visit with your doctor to discuss your wishes. It’s important that your doctor documents any past weight loss efforts as well as your existing health condition.

CONTACT YOUR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER

The next step is to schedule your first appointment with a weight loss surgery center. You may be asked to complete a questionnaire before your visit that will detail your family history and previous weight loss efforts.

Before surgery is scheduled, you’ll undergo several tests to determine whether you are a good candidate for weight loss surgery.

These tests may include:

Complete blood count

Metabolic profile

Cholesterol and triglyceride tests

Vitamin B level evaluation

Iron profile

Thyroid tests

Hemoglobin tests

Tests for bacteria in your blood

Electrocardiogram

Echocardiogram

Pap smear

Mammogram

Most insurance companies will also require you to:

Attend an information seminar about weight loss surgery

Be evaluated by a mental health professional

Undergo counseling with a nutrition expert

You may also be required to go on a diet for three to six months before your surgery in order to lose weight and show your commitment to the weight loss process.
